Rt. Honorable President Mrs. Bidya Devi Bhandari’s Message on the Occasion of International Day of Older Persons 2016

On the occasionof 26thInternational Day of Older Persons (IDOP), I express my hearty good wishes to the respected senior citizens living at home and abroadfor theirhappiness, peace, good health, and long life. Amid different programs, the Day is being celebrated across the country with the slogan “Take a Stand Against Ageism,” thereby challenging all discriminations against older people.

The young generation should be ready to take lessons from the experiences of senior citizens and take inspirations from their contributions. Being able to do this shall be considered a true respect to senior citizens.

In line with this spirit, the present Constitution guarantees some fundamental rights for senior citizens and specifies that there shall be special protection and social security for them from the state. Therefore, in spite of limited resources, the state hasbeen providing social security allowance and different other facilities to senior citizens.

In the end, I appeal to all associated stake-holders for their appropriate contributions to make senior citizens’ life respected, dignified, and happy.

Thank you!
